  • Li, Goerges roll in Copenhagen openers

    Copenhagen, Denmark (Sports Network) - Second-seeded Li Na of China and recent Bad Gastein champion Julia Goerges were a pair of first-round winners Monday at the $220,000 e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open.

    The Aussie Open semifinalist Li was tested in the first set before cruising to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Czech wild card Kristyna Pliskova, while the fifth-seeded Goerges grounded Swiss Stefanie Voegele 6-2, 6-4 on the indoor hardcourt at Farum Arena.

    The 21-year-old German Goerges captured her first-ever WTA Tour title in Bad Gastein, Austria two weeks ago and has now won six straight and nine of her last 10 matches.

    Also on Day 1, seventh-seeded Czech Klara Zakopalova fought her way past Paraguay's Rossana de los Rios 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0 and eighth-seeded German Angelique Kerber crushed Czech Renata Voracova 6-1, 6-1.

    The top seed this week is 2009 U.S. Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark.

    The heavy crowd favorite will open her stay here against Croat Petra Martic on Tuesday.

    This week's champion will pocket $37,000.
