  • Bartoli, Sharapova move on in Stanford

    Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Marion Bartoli and Maria Sharapova were both second-round winners in Thursday's action at the $700,000 Bank of the West Classic tennis event.

    The fourth-seeded and defending champion Bartoli notched a 6-3, 6-4 win over former French Open champ Ana Ivanovic, while Sharapova, seeded fifth, knocked off Olga Govortsova 6-3, 6-3 on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

    Maria Kirilenko, unseeded at this event, upended sixth-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer 6-4, 6-3, while eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka defeated American Melanie Oudin 6-3, 6-1 to round out Thursday's action.

    Bartoli surprised American star Venus Williams in last year's finale here. The winner of the tournament will receive $107,000.
