  • Schiavone opener suspended in Istanbul

    Istanbul, Turkey (Sports Network) - French Open champion Francesca Schiavone will have to wait until Tuesday to complete her opening-round match at the $220,000 Istanbul Cup tennis event.

    The top-seeded Schiavone was leading Brit Anne Keothavong 4-0 in the first set on Monday when their match was suspended because of rain and darkness on the hardcourts here.

    Schiavone became the first-ever Italian woman to both reach and win a Grand Slam final at last month's French Open.

    6 Andrea Petkovic of Germany leveled Turkish wild card Pemra Ozgen 6-2, 6-1 and Swiss Stefanie Voegele took out No. 4 Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

    One other Day-1 result saw reigning Istanbul champion Vera Dushevina overcome Croat Petra Martic 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Russian Dushevina doused Czech Lucie Hradecka in last year's finale here.
