  • Zvonareva, who is participating in her first tournament since finishing runner-up to Serena Williams at Wimbledon, got by Dominika Cibulkova 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 in almost 2 1/2 hours.

    Zvonareva was the highest seeded player to participate in the first round, as top seeds Jelena Jankovic and Samantha Stosur received a bye into the second round.

  • Safina cruised in the first set before prevailing in a tough second set, beating Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko by a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) score at La Costa Resort and Spa. This San Diego event was last held in 2007.

    The struggling Safina is a former No. 1 who has dropped down to No. 35 in the world.

  • The Aussie Open semifinalist Li was tested in the first set before cruising to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Czech wild card Kristyna Pliskova, while the fifth-seeded Goerges grounded Swiss Stefanie Voegele 6-2, 6-4 on the indoor hardcourt at Farum Arena.

    The 21-year-old German Goerges captured her first-ever WTA Tour title in Bad Gastein, Austria two weeks ago and has now won six straight and nine of her last 10 matches.

  • Azarenka, of Belarus, broke the Russian three times in the first set, then three times in the second to take a 6-4, 6-1 victory on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

    This is the fourth career crown for Azarenka, who took home $107,000 with the win. She lost in the finals at Dubai and Eastbourne earlier this year.

  • The epic match lasted over three hours, with the third-seeded Pavlyuchenkova securing her second career WTA title in as many final appearances. She won the Monterrey Open back in March with a three-set decision over Daniela Hantuchova.

    Pavlyuchenkova, 19, became the 10th woman to win two singles titles this year.

  • Russia's Sharapova bounced back from a first set loss to rally for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over third-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

    Earlier on Saturday, Belarus' Azarenka celebrated her 21st birthday by upending top-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to reach the final.

  • The Belarusian improved to 4-0 against the Australian in her career with a thorough 6-2, 6-3 victory on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

    Azarenka will face the winner of the Agnieszka Radwanska-Maria Sharapova match.

  • The third-seeded Pavlyuchenkova earned a 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 7-5 victory over Australia's Jarmila Groth, while Vesnina rallied for a 1-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) triumph over sixth-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany.

    Pavlyuchenkova will play in her second final of the year and her career. She claimed the Monterrey Open title back in March with a three-set win over Daniela Hantuchova.

  • Stosur outlasted seventh-seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Stosur, who lost to Francesca Schiavone in the finale at Roland Garros, is playing her first tournament since breaking into the top five.

    Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the eighth seed, took down defending champion and fourth-seeded Marion Bartoli 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Bartoli of France surprised American star Venus Williams in last year's finale here. Azarenka will battle Stosur in Saturday's semifinals.

  • The fourth-seeded and defending champion Bartoli notched a 6-3, 6-4 win over former French Open champ Ana Ivanovic, while Sharapova, seeded fifth, knocked off Olga Govortsova 6-3, 6-3 on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

    Maria Kirilenko, unseeded at this event, upended sixth-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer 6-4, 6-3, while eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka defeated American Melanie Oudin 6-3, 6-1 to round out Thursday's action.

  • Britain's Elena Baltacha sent the top-seeded Schiavone packing 6-4, 6-2 in 1 hour, 25 minutes on Day 4 here. The 26-year-old Baltacha piled up five service breaks in the upset.

    Schiavone became the first-ever Italian woman to capture a Grand Slam title in June when she ran the table in stunning fashion at Roland Garros.

  • Stosur, who lost to Francesca Schiavone in the finale at Roland Garros, is playing her first tournament since breaking into the top five. She leads the WTA Tour this year with 36 victories and reached the quarterfinals here for a fourth straight year.

    Next up for Stosur will be seventh-seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, who beat Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova, 6-1, 6-4 on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

  • Russian-born Aussie Anastasia Rodionova upended the fifth-seeded Pironkova in 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 fashion on Day 3 here. Earlier this month, Pironkova became the first-ever Bulgarian to reach a Grand Slam semifinal at the All England Club.

    Sixth-seededGerman Andrea Petkovic avoided an upset and reached the quarterfinals by outlasting Russian qualifier Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-3.

  • The former Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli handled American Ashley Harkleroad 6-1, 6-4 on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium, while Sharapova straight-setted Zheng Jie of China, 6-4, 7-5.

    Bartoli, seeded fourth this week, surprised American Venus Williams in last year's Stanford finale and was the runner-up here in 2008. The Frenchwoman lost to Williams in the 2007 Wimbledon final.

  • The former Wimbledon runner-up Bartoli handled American Ashley Harkleroad 6-1, 6-4 on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

    The 25-year-old Harkleroad, from Georgia, is best known for becoming the first-ever American tennis player to pose for Playboy magazine, back in 2008. "Pebbles," as she is nicknamed, is also a mother, having given birth to a son in March of last year.

  • The top-seeded Schiavone was leading Britain's Anne Keothavong 4-0 in the first set here on Monday when their match was suspended because of rain and darkness.

    Schiavone wound up with an easy 6-2, 6-2 decision and will meet another Brit, Elena Baltacha, in the round of 16.

  • Ivanovic, who has dropped down to No. 63 in the world rankings, bested Russian Alisa Kleybanova, 6-3, 6-2, on the hardcourts at Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Kleybanova had beaten Ivanovic in two previous meetings this year.

    Safina, however, was ousted by Kimiko Date Krumm, 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, in two hours, 22 minutes.

  • The top-seeded Schiavone was leading Brit Anne Keothavong 4-0 in the first set on Monday when their match was suspended because of rain and darkness on the hardcourts here.

    Schiavone became the first-ever Italian woman to both reach and win a Grand Slam final at last month's French Open.

  • Chakvetadze, who won her first championship of the year and eighth of her career, took advantage of a poor second serve from her opponent. Larsson won just 3-of-21 points on her second serve.

    The 23-year-old Chakvetadze was appearing in her first final since 2008 in New Haven. She became the eighth unseeded champion on the tour this year.

  • The second-seeded Bacsinszky had to wait until Sunday morning to learn her opponent for the title match after rain postponed Saturday's semifinal between Goerges and France's Alize Cornet.

    Goerges posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory to advance into the first WTA Tour final of her career.

  • Hercog, a Slovenian, won the first set, 6-0, in 24 minutes and took the opening game in the second set before Chakvetadze regained her composure to win the last two sets, 6-2, 6-2.

    The Russian Chakvetadze, ranked 103rd, will be playing in her first final since losing to Caroline Wozniacki in New Haven in August of 2008.

  • The second-seeded Bacsinszky rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory to advance to Sunday's final, but she'll have to wait a day for her opponent as rain washed out the second scheduled semifinal between France's Alize Cornet and Julia Goerges of Germany.

    Cornet and Goerges will play their semifinal on Sunday morning prior to the title match.

  • The sixth-seeded Dushevina had a 5-3 lead in the third set and two match points at 5-4, but Chakvetadze rallied for the 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win.

    Chakvetadze's semifinal opponent will be seventh-seeded Slovenian Polona Hercog, who advanced with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph of Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele.
