  • Malisse, Zeballos advance with first-round wins in Washington

    Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Belgian Xavier Malisse and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina each posted first-round triumphs Sunday at the $1.402 million Legg Mason Tennis Classic, a hardcourt U.S. Open Series event.

    Malisse posted a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision over Colombian Santiago Giraldo in a match that was officially timed at 1 hour, 52 minutes but was delayed for more than two hours due to rain at the Fitzgerald Tennis Center.

    In the late contest, Zeballos took down Michal Przysiezny of Poland by a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 count.

    Juan Martin del Potro, who is not defending his titles this week, topped American star Andy Roddick in last year's final here and also captured this event in 2008.

    The top seeds are the three-time D.C. winner Roddick and Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych, both of whom received byes.

    The 2010 Legg Mason champion will pocket $261,500.
