Patriots add OL Ghiaciuc

Ghiaciuc, 29, did not play in the NFL in 2009, as he was waived by the Chiefs prior to the regular season and did not play for the Chargers after signing a contract with them in late December.

Cincinnati selected the Central Michigan product in the fourth round of the 2005 draft, and the 6-foot-4, 303-pound lineman started 42 of the 48 games he played in for the Bengals.

The Colts seemed like a lock to bring home their second championship in four seasons, winning their first 14 games before going mostly with their reserves over the final two contests, both losses. In fact Indianapolis only lost three games in all under first-year head coach Jim Caldwell, but one of those was a 31-17 setback to the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl, a contest in which the Colts couldn't hold early leads.

Lions make it official with Suh

Lions president Tom Lewand said Wednesday morning that Suh was set to sign the deal before taking the field for the afternoon practice.

"We've officially agreed to terms," said Lewand. "We've worked hard the last several weeks, in particular, the last several days. As with all of these deals, it's matter of compromising and finding common ground. While we would have liked to do it earlier [and] I'm sure he would have liked to do it earlier, we're just glad it's done and over with." Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but the Detroit Free Press has reported it to be a four-year deal worth $68 million with $40 million guaranteed.

Vikings hope to sway Favre with more money

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, which on Tuesday first broke the news of Favre's apparent decision to call it quits, the Vikings are set to offer the future Hall of Fame quarterback an additional $7 million to play one more season.

Favre has one year left on his contract at a reported $13 million, but the Vikings are apparently willing to make it $16 million in salary with another $4 million available through incentives.

Jags rookie DT Smith may miss season

According to The Florida Times-Union, Smith, the team's third-round pick this year, will have to undergo surgery to repair the injury and is out indefinitely.

A two-time First-Team All-WAC selection, Smith finished his collegiate career at Louisiana Tech with 23 1/2 tackles for loss and 12 1/2 sacks to go along with 197 tackles in 49 games.

Vick won't face punishment from NFL

League commissioner Roger Goodell visited Eagles camp Tuesday and met with Vick to inform him of the decision, which the NFL announced in a statement.

"Commissioner Goodell spoke several weeks ago by phone with Michael, Tony Dungy, and Eagles Coach Andy Reid," the statement said. "All were in agreement on the need for additional support measures to be added to Michael's plan to enhance his opportunity to succeed in life and football.

Lions agree with top pick Suh

MLive.com is reporting that it is a five-year deal with a maximum value of $68 million, with $40 million guaranteed.

The 6-foot-4, 300 pound Suh recorded 85 tackles, 12 sacks and 24 tackles for loss last season in 14 games for Nebraska. He was the Outland Trophy, Lombardi Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award winner while also being named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Falcons' Babineaux suspended one game

The suspension follows Babineaux's arrest last year on charges of possession of marijuana. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Babineaux came to a plea agreement in July, and that the felony charge was downgraded to three misdemeanor counts of possession.

Babineaux will miss the team's season-opener September 12 at Pittsburgh, and will be eligible to return to the active roster the following day. He will still be able to participate in preseason practices and games.

Terms for the standout University of California defensive tackle were not disclosed, but the Florida Times-Union on Monday reported it to be a five-year pact worth $28 million with $17.5 million in guaranteed money.

Alualu was the third of five defensive tackles drafted in the first round, behind only Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy. He was the fourth defensive tackle chosen in the first round by the Jaguars and first since John Henderson in 2002.

Report: Favre set to retire

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the future Hall of Fame quarterback has informed Minnesota Vikings officials that he won't return for a second season with the club.

Favre, who turns 41 on October 10, has one year left on his contract with the Vikings and it was thought that he would return some time during training camp.

Haynesworth skips conditioning test again

Haynesworth has yet to practice since training camp began last week because he has been unable to pass the test, which requires him to complete a series of running drills in an allotted amount of time. He failed the test on Thursday and Friday of last week, then skipped it on Saturday and Sunday because of knee soreness.

On Monday, Haynesworth began the drill but was unable to finish because of the knee issue.
