  • Franchitti dominating Indy 500 after first 50 laps

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Defending IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti has led for a majority of the first 50 laps in the 94th running of the Indianapolis 500.

Pole sitter Helio Castroneves led the field to the green, but Franchitti passed him for the lead just before the first caution came on the opening lap when Davey Hamilton made contact with Tomas Scheckter and slammed into the inside wall on the backstretch.

Will Power briefly took the lead, but Power encountered a pit road mishap on his first stop. He left his stall with part of the fuel hose attached to his car. Power had to return to pit road for a pass-through penalty and fell back to 25th.

Bruno Junqueira also crashed in the early laps and is out of the event.

Tony Kanaan started 33rd, but moved up to 14th by the one-quarter mark of the race. Danica Patrick was running 20th.
