Franchitti conserves enough fuel to win his second Indy 500
Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Dario Franchitti stretched his fuel long enough to capture his second Indianapolis 500 victory on Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Franchitti, the defending IZOD IndyCar Series champion and 2007 Indy 500 winner, dominated the race by leading 155 of 200 laps. The Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver last pitted on lap 164. During that stop, several drivers, including pole sitter and last year's race winner Helio Castroneves, remained on the track.
When Castroneves was forced to pit with nine laps remaining, Franchitti took the lead for good. The race ended under caution on the final lap when Mike Conway was involved in a horrifying crash on the backstretch. Conway clipped Ryan Hunter-Reay and then sailed spectacularly into the fence before landing back down on the track.
Conway was awake and alert after the incident, but had to be transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital for further observation.
Dan Wheldon finished second in the Indy 500 for the second-straight year, while Alex Lloyd, Franchitti's teammate, Scott Dixon, and Danica Patrick completed the top-five.
Castroneves wound up finishing ninth.
Chip Ganassi became the first team owner to win the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 in the same year. Jamie McMurray, in his first year with Ganassi's NASCAR Sprint Cup team, won the Daytona 500 in February.
Ganassi has now won the Indy 500 four times.
