Alonso, Ferrari rebound with German GP win
Hockenheim, Germany (Sports Network) - Fernando Alonso won Sunday's German Grand Prix, while his teammate, Felipe Massa, finished second to give Ferrari a controversial 1-2 finish in Hockenheim.
Massa dominated most of the race and held the lead on lap 49 before Alonso easily passed him in turn six to take the top position. Massa was told by his race engineer over the team radio that Alonso had the faster car.
Alonso had been pushing Massa for the lead several times prior to his winning pass. Massa appeared to make room for Alonso when he overtook him.
During post-race interviews, Massa was asked if he was given instructions by his team to surrender the lead to Alonso.
"I don't think I need to say anything about that," Massa said.
Massa was attempting to win the German GP on the one-year anniversary of his near-fatal crash during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Brazilian denied any fact that Ferrari made a controversial decision to allow Alonso to take over the lead.
"He passed me," Massa added.
Alonso captured his second victory of the season and the 23rd of his Formula One career, which placed the Spaniard in a tie with Nelson Piquet for ninth on the circuit's all-time race winners list.
"At the exit of turn six, I saw Felipe a little bit slow and tried to overtake," Alonso said.
"You have to take every opportunity to overtake, because this is a very difficult circuit to overtake. You only have one chance into turn six. " Alonso and Massa also finished one-two, respectively, in the March 14 season- opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
"The only thing I feel is that we are working for the team, and that we do a very good job for the team; that's the most important thing," Massa said.
At the start of the 67-lap race, Sebastian Vettel from Germany started on the pole, but Massa charged past Vettel for the lead heading into the first turn. Alonso then moved up to second.
"I'm not really sure what happened," said Vettel, who finished third in front of his home crowd.
"I had quite a lot of grip. I dumped the first clutch and had quite a bit of a balk, so the first five to 10 meters of the acceleration were very poor. I was lucky I didn't stall the engine." Current points leader Lewis Hamilton finished fourth, while his McLaren teammate and defending world champion Jenson Button took the fifth spot.
Red Bull's Mark Webber came in sixth, followed by Robert Kubica from Renault.
Mercedes GP teammates and German compatriots Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher finished eighth and ninth, while Vitaly Petrov from Renault completed the top-10.
Hamilton has now accumulated 157 points, compared to 143 for Button.
