• Hamilton prevails in Canadian GP, takes points lead

  Montreal, Canada (Sports Network) - Lewis Hamilton put on a masterful performance to win Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix, while his teammate, Jenson Button, finished behind him to give McLaren a 1-2 finish.

  Hamilton, the pole sitter, passed Red Bull's Mark Webber with 20 laps remaining in the 70-lap event at the 2.709-mile, 14-turn Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course.

  He then held off Button in final laps to win at Montreal for the second time in his three attempts here. His first career Formula One victory came in the Canadian GP during his 2007 rookie season.

  Button finished 2.2 seconds behind Hamilton, while Ferrari's Fernando Alonso took the third spot.

  Webber ended up finishing fifth, one spot behind his teammate Sebastian Vettel.

  With the win, Hamilton assumed the world championship lead.

  The 2008 F1 titleholder has now accumulated 109 points, compared to 106 for Button, the defending champion, and 103 for Webber.
