• Hamilton grabs Canadian GP pole, ends Red Bull's streak

  Montreal, Canada (Sports Network) - Lewis Hamilton from McLaren overtook Red Bull's Mark Webber in the closing seconds of qualifying to win the pole for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.

  Hamilton broke Red Bull's streak of winning the pole for the first seven Formula One grand prix this season after the Briton turned a lap of one minute,15.105seconds around the 2.709-mile, 14-turn Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course.

  The 2008 world champion recorded his first pole of the season and the 18th of his F1 career. His first pole and grand prix win came in the Canadian GP during his 2007 rookie season. He also won the pole for this race the following year.

  Webber, the current championship leader, finished 0.27 seconds behind Hamilton to take the outside pole. Webber had won the pole for the last three grand prix.

  His Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel was third quickest in qualifying, followed by Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and defending F1 champion Jenson Button from McLaren.

  Vitantonio Liuzzi from Force India qualified sixth, while Ferrari's Felipe Massa grabbed the seventh spot and Robert Kubica from Renault secured the eighth position. Kubica's first and only win so far came in the Canadian GP two years ago, the last time F1 raced in North America.

  Liuzzi's teammate, Adrian Sutil, and Nico Rosberg from Mercedes GP completed the top-10.

  Rosberg bested his teammate and German compatriot Michael Schumacher, who qualified 13th. Schumacher, the seven-time F1 champion, did not make it into the third and final round of qualifying.

  The Canadian GP was dropped from the 2009 calendar after F1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and race organizers could not reach an agreement. The event was reinstated for the 2010 schedule.

  Sunday's Canadian GP is scheduled to start at noon (et).
