  • Notre Dame-Miami to renew rivalry in 2012

Coral Gables, FL (Sports Network) - The University of Miami and the University of Notre Dame football programs have agreed to play each other in 2012, 22 years after the schools last met.

The game will be played at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, and the schools also announced they will meet in a home-and-home series in 2016 and 2017.

"I am excited to announce that the University of Miami has renewed its historic football rivalry with the University of Notre Dame," University of Miami director of athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "Not only is it an outstanding opportunity for both programs, but it is great for the sport of college football." The rivalry, dubbed by many as "Catholics vs. Convicts" in the late 1980s, was highlighted by a fight between the teams in the tunnel of Notre Dame Stadium in 1988, a game the Fighting Irish won by a 31-30 score en route to their last national title.

The series was not renewed after 1990 due to the bad blood between the programs.

The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series, 15-7-1.
