  • Nino defeats Mayol in rematch

San Juan del Rio, Mexico (Sports Network) - Omar Nino claimed the WBC light flyweight belt with a unanimous decision over champion Rodel Mayol in a rematch of the pair's controversial technical draw in February.

The bout was stopped multiple times after headbutts by both men, but in the end the judges all ruled in favor of Nino (29-3-2, 11 KOs), 115-112, 117-109 and 115-111.

Nino takes over the belt for the second time and first since 2006.

In February, it seemed as if Nino knocked out Mayol (26-5-2), but that wasn't ruled to be the case. Nino landed a low blow, and as the referee was about to break up the fighters and give Mayol a chance to recover, Nino landed a crushing punch that knocked out Mayol. The fight was then stopped and called a draw.
