Pondexter, Taurasi earn WNBA Player of the Week honors again
New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York's Cappie Pondexter and Phoenix's Diana Taurasi for the second straight week, were respectively named the WNBA's Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week for the period ending August 1.
Pondexter, who claimed her eighth career weekly award, posted averages of 19.0 points and 3.7 assists per contest in leading the Liberty to a 3-0 mark during the period. She also led the Eastern Conference by averaging 35.3 minutes per game.
Pondexter was instrumental in guiding New York to wins over Los Angeles and Connecticut by posting 20 and 24 points, respectively, which were both game highs.
She also surpassed the 3,000-point plateau for her career, becoming the second fastest player in WNBA history to do so. Podexter accomplished the milestone in 154 games, compared to Taurasi, who reached the mark in 151 contests.
Taurasi took home her 13th career weekly award and third of the season for leading the Mercury to a 2-1 record.
Taurasi registered a league-high 26 points per game for the week and averaged eight assists per game, which was good for second best during the period.
Taurasi went for 35 points and a career-high 11 assists in the club's 97-96 victory over Chicago.
