  • Wood last pitched on July 11 before landing on the DL with a blister on his right index finger.

It was the second disabled list stint in 2010 for Wood, who began the season on the DL with a back strain.

MLB

  • Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired reliever Chad Qualls from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for a player to be named later.

The right-handed Qualls has posted an 8.29 earned run average, the worst of his seven-year career, with 12 saves in 38 innings over 43 appearances this season. Prior to 2010, his highest ERA in any season was 3.76 in 2006, when he pitched for Houston.

MLB

  • The Marlins got home runs from Gaby Sanchez and Cody Ross in last night's 4-2 victory, giving them 10 long balls in their last five games. Hanley Ramirez and Logan Morrison also drove in a run each as Florida has now won two straight, four of six and 10 of its last 14 overall.

"They're making adjustments," Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said of the recent homer surge. "They are staying back more. They're not swinging at bad pitches. I think that's the key. They are not swinging at bad pitches. Their strike zone is smaller. They're getting ahead more in the count." Chris Volstad benefited from the home runs, yielding two runs over five-plus innings to get his first victory since June 13.

MLB

  • Colorado, which had lost eight straight before Thursday, made it two in a row in Friday's opener when Carlos Gonzalez went 4-for-6 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI and the Rockies scored 12 times with two outs in the eighth inning to pull away from Chicago, 17-2.

The Rockies batted around twice in an eighth that saw them set club marks for runs (12) and hits (13) and the MLB record for consecutive hits (11), all while stranding the bases loaded.

MLB

  • Newly-acquired Dan Haren will make his second start for Los Angeles this evening. The former Arizona hurler's first start ended early on Monday, as Haren was struck by a line drive on his right pitching forearm. He lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight Red Sox. Haren is a combined 7-9 this season with a 4.57 ERA, numbers less impressive than we are accustomed to seeing from the standout hurler.

In his career against Texas, Haren is 3-5 with a 4.29 ERA in 10 games.

MLB

  • Suppan tries again tonight for his first victory of 2010 in the second contest of a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium.

Suppan is 0-4 with a 4.75 earned run average in seven starts since joining the Cardinals after getting released by the Brewers, and 0-6 with a 6.18 ERA overall this season. The 35-year-old righty lost his most recent start last Friday versus the Cubs, yielding five runs on 10 hits over six innings.

MLB

  • The Mets plunged to a single game above .500 after Friday night's series opener, as Kelly Johnson hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth and Miguel Montero tacked on a three-run shot later in the frame to help the Diamondbacks snap a seven-game slide with a 9-6 win.

Montero went 3-for-5 with four RBI to highlight the offensive outburst for Arizona, which had lost four games at home to San Francisco and three straight at Philadelphia coming in.

MLB

  • Felix Hernandez will get the ball for Seattle tonight, and while this season has been bitterly disappointing for the Mariners, the ace of their staff has been as good as expected. Sure, his 7-7 record is mediocre, but the more telling stat is Hernandez's 2.86 ERA. The stud righty was roughed up a bit on Monday, however, allowing nine hits and four earned runs over seven innings of a loss to the White Sox.

Hernandez is 1-0 against Minnesota this season and 4-3 lifetime against the Twins with a 2.56 ERA.

MLB

  • Baltimore announced prior to Thursday's game it had hired Buck Showalter to serve as the team's new manager, although the former Yankees, Diamondbacks and Rangers skipper won't officially take over until the Orioles return from their current road trip on Tuesday. Baltimore fired field general Dave Trembley on June 4, with interim manager Juan Samuel having gone 17-31 since assuming those duties.

This has certainly been a forgettable season for Brad Bergesen, as the Baltimore right-hander is 3-9 with a lofty 6.95 ERA. He has allowed 125 hits through 88 innings and has only struck out 35 batters. On Monday, he permitted eight earned runs on 10 hits in five innings pitched against the White Sox.

MLB

  • The red-hot Rays, who have won seven games in a row, are now just a game back of the Yankees in the race for the division crown thanks to last night's 3-2 victory in front of a playoff-type atmosphere in the opener of this three-game set at Tropicana Field.

Rays starter Wade Davis (9-9) gave up a two-run homer to Nick Swisher in the first inning, but shut the Yankees down for the rest of his seven-inning start. He picked up his fourth straight winning start when Matt Joyce blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning.

MLB

  • Yesterday, Gordon Beckham had two hits and drove in two runs to support six solid innings from Lucas Harrell in his major league debut as Chicago downed Oakland, 6-1, in the opener of this series.

Harrell (1-0), promoted from Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the day, yielded a lone run on four hits while working around five walks for the White Sox, who have won five in a row overall and haven't lost as the host since June 27.

MLB

  • Having already traded one face of the franchise, Houston appears on the verge of shipping out another before tonight's continuation of a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers at Minute Maid Park.

With the Astros 13 1/2 games off the pace in the National League Central, the club has become sellers at this year's trade deadline. They already shipped starting pitcher Roy Oswalt to the Phillies on Thursday and are rumored to have a deal in the works today to send Lance Berkman to the New York Yankees.

MLB

  • One day after spoiling the Philadelphia debut of Roy Oswalt, Washington will go for a third straight win this evening in the second contest of a three-game series at Nationals Park.

Hoping to make up a small deficit for first place in the National League East, the Phillies acquired Oswalt from the Astros on Thursday and gave their new right-hander the start in last night's opener.

MLB

  • With Clayton Kershaw serving a five-game suspension for intentionally hitting San Francisco's Aaron Rowand in a game last week, the Dodgers are in need of a starter for this contest and will go with Billingsley on short rest.

Billingsley will take the hill after throwing six shutout innings in a 2-0 win over the Padres on Tuesday. The right-hander threw 84 pitches six days after firing a five-hit shutout over the Giants.

MLB

  • The Reds entered Friday's opener in first place in the Central, but their 6-4 loss to the Braves while the St. Louis Cardinals were beating Pittsburgh, 1-0, allowed the Cardinals to reclaim the top spot with a half-game advantage.

Jayson Heyward delivered the game-winning two-run double in the 10th inning as Atlanta upended Cincinnati.

MLB

  • In Friday's opener, Jhonny Peralta hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs in his Tigers debut, as Detroit held on against Boston's furious ninth- inning rally for a 6-5 decision.

Will Rhymes added two hits and an RBI while Austin Jackson also drove in a run for the Tigers, who snapped a four-game overall slide and won on the road for the first time since July 3.

MLB

  • Righty Jake Westbrook will get the ball for Cleveland this afternoon, and he will attempt to improve a 6-7 record and 4.65 ERA.

He allowed three runs over eight innings on Monday, but a lack of run support led to defeat. In 127 2/3 innings of work this season, Westbrook has permitted 133 hits and 44 walks while striking out 73 batters.

MLB

  • A day after nearly losing to a winless Czech Republic team, coach Greg Hamilton made sure his team treated their matchup as if it was the last game they would play.

"We tried to take a business-like approach," said Hamilton, after his team eliminated Italy with an 11-1 thrashing on Friday night. "I think everybody realizes what's at stake.

MLB

  • Omar Luis threw nine solid innings in a gutsy 144-pitch effort to shutdown a dangerous United States lineup as Cuba held on for the 3-2 victory in a thrilling game featuring two of baseball's biggest powerhouse nations.

"This was fun to watch, the fans brought some excitement here," said U.S. hitting coach Brian McRae. "Anytime Cuba and United States play it's going to be a good ballgame and today was no different." "I was glad to be a part of it." Luis (2-0) battled through a shaky ninth to hold on for the victory, earning Cuba a date in the semifinals versus Australia.

MLB

  • Hanley Ramirez and Logan Morrison each drove in a run for the Marlins, who have won two in a row and four of six overall.

"They're making adjustments," Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said of the recent home run surge. "They are staying back more. They're not swinging at bad pitches.

MLB

  • Prado slid somewhat awkwardly headfirst into home plate on Jayson Heyward's game-winning two-run double and hurt his right pinky in the process.

He was looked at by the Braves' training staff and was then removed from the game and replaced by Alex Gonzalez.

MLB

  • Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Brendan Ryan's infield single scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the St. Louis Cardinals snuck past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-0, in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium.

Javier Lopez (2-2) started on the hill for the Pirates in the home 10th. Pinch-hitter Ryan Ludwick led off with a double and moved to third on Yadier Molina's sacrifice bunt. Ryan then hit a sharp grounder to second, but Neil Walker couldn't handle the ball completely, allowing Ludwick to cross the plate for the win.

MLB

  • Rivera drove in four runs total for the Angels, who still trail the AL West- leading Rangers by eight games after snapping a four-game losing streak. Erick Aybar also homered and drove in two runs, while Alberto Callaspo went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Ervin Santana (10-7) was the beneficiary of the support, getting the win despite allowing seven runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits and two walks in six innings. Brian Fuentes notched his 19th save.

MLB

  • Lincecum (11-4) battled through the first three frames and held on through seven, scattering seven hits, two walks and two runs while striking out nine for the Giants, who won for the seventh time in nine games despite giving up three runs in the ninth inning.

Rafael Furcal carried Los Angeles' offense by going 3-for-3 with a home run, two walks and a double. Scott Podsednik and Russell Martin each had two hits and a RBI in the club's third straight setback.

MLB

  • Alfredo Simon (2-2) came on to protect Baltimore's one-run lead in the ninth, but couldn't convert the save opportunity.

The first two Kansas City batters were quickly retired, but Rick Ankiel kept the game alive with a walk. Wilson Betemit followed with a single through the infield's right side to put runners on the corners, and Gordon ended the game by belting a Simon offering well over the wall in right field.
