  • TCU pounds Florida State in CWS debut; UCLA drops Florida

Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - Jason Coats' two-run double ignited a five-run first inning, as TCU posted an 8-1 victory over Florida State in the opening game of the 2010 College World Series.

In the second game of the double-elimination event, UCLA also notched its first CWS win, using the right arm of Trevor Bauer and timely hitting in an 11-3 romp of Florida. The Bruins will next play the Horned Frogs, while the Seminoles and Gators also meet on Monday to see which team stays alive.

TCU starter Matt Purke gave up an unearned run in the top of the first, but the Horned Frogs responded in the bottom of the inning.

Coats advanced to third on a groundout and came home on a Joe Weik single to make it 3-1. Taylor Featherston lofted a sacrifice fly after Witte doubled. Aaron Schultz then singled home Witte to give TCU a four-run cushion.

The Horned Frogs picked up a run in the third and Bryan Holaday hit a solo homer in the next frame to make it 7-1.

Coats added a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Purke scattered four hits, walked four and struck out seven over seven innings for TCU, which became the first team to win its CWS debut since Georgia Tech in 1994.

FSU starter Sean Gilmartin allowed six runs on eight hits in three innings.

In the nightcap, Bauer tossed seven full innings and struck out 11 while getting charged with three runs on six hits and two walks for UCLA, which is in its first CWS since 1997.

Niko Gallego had four of the Bruins' 18 hits, and Dean Espy went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI in the win.

Florida's Alex Panteliodis lasted only 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and a walk.

Espy knocked in a run in the first inning with a base hit, and Brian Johnson hit a two-out, two-run single to left in the bottom half for a brief Florida lead.

The Bruins went ahead for good with three runs in the third, the first trotting home thanks to an error on third baseman Austin Maddox. A wild pitch produced another run before Cody Regis singled to center for a 4-2 game.

Josh Adams hit a solo round-tripper in the home fourth to offset a run that scored in the top half on Mike Zunino's passed ball. Steve Rodriguez's two-run single to center improved UCLA's lead to 7-3 in the fifth.

UCLA got another run in the sixth via a wild pitch, this one coming from Jeff Barfield, and Beau Amaral and Brett Krill added run-scoring singles in the seventh and eighth inning, respectively.

Espy's RBI single in the ninth capped the rout.
