Oklahoma, Clemson complete College World Series field
Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Clemson and Oklahoma won their Super Regionalelimination gamesMonday to become the final two teams to advance to the College World Series.
They join Florida, South Carolina, Florida State, TCU, UCLA and Arizona State in the College World Series field. Oklahoma's first game will be against South Carolina, while Clemson will play Arizona State first. Series action gets underway Saturday.
Both Clemson and Oklahoma advanced by winning the final two games of their best-of-three Super Regionals.
Oklahoma had forced a decisive Game 3 in the Charlottesville Super Regional with a win over Virginia on Sunday, when Cody Reine drove in five runs off two homers for the Sooners.
Reine powered Oklahoma again Monday, going 3-for-5 with two more homers and six RBI in the Sooners' 11-0 victory. Bobby Shore provided a stellar effort on the mound, allowing four hits and two walks in eight innings. Ryan Duke pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the five-hitter and send Oklahoma to the College World Series for the first time since 1995.
Branden Kline gave up four runs in 1 2/3 innings in the start for Virginia, which ends its season with a 51-14 record.
Richie Shaffer hit two home runs, while John Hinson went 3-for-5 with a homer in Clemson's 8-6 victory over Alabama in the Clemson Super Regional.
The Tigers built an 8-1 lead before holding on, as Alabama rallied for five runs in the ninth. Clemson used three pitchers in the final inning, when Will Lamb came in to get the final out.
Clemson advanced to the College World Series for the 12th time in history and for the first time since 2006. Alabama ended its season with a 42-25 record.
