  • Wittels' hit streak at 56, but FIU ousted from tourney

Coral Gables, FL (Sports Network) - Florida International shortstop Garrett Wittels extended his hitting streak to 56 games on Saturday, but his chance at history will have to wait until the 2011 season.

Wittels hit an RBI double in the first inning of a 15-9 loss to Dartmouth Saturday afternoon. The defeat eliminated FIU from the NCAA Coral Gables Regional.

The 56-game streak is two shy of Robin Ventura's all-time Division I record of hitting safely in 58 consecutive games in 1987. Three players in Division I and Major League Baseball have accomplished such a feat, with the third being Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio who hit in 56 straight games in 1941 with the Yankees.

Wittels finished the season batting .413 with 100 hits, including 21 doubles, and 60 RBI during his sophomore year.
